THE ART OF SHOWING UP

"At the end of 2025, I started thinking about what I could do to make my life feel a little more fulfilling.I realized I hadn’t really been thinking about learning something new or doing something just for myself. So I decided to start pottery again. It's something I enjoyed almost 20 years ago, and something I felt could do just for me."

At the end of 2025, I found myself confronting an uncomfortable pattern: I had spent years prioritizing productivity, routines, and responsibilities, completely neglecting the simple act of doing something purely for my own joy. I hadn’t picked up a new skill or given myself permission to be a beginner in years.

Life Lesson 1

Fulfillment begins the moment you stop waiting for the perfect time and simply carve out space for yourself.

Returning to pottery, a craft I hadn’t touched in almost two decades, was an intentional decision to reclaim personal time. Choosing a studio just three blocks from my front door eliminated every logistical excuse not to go.

The romanticized nostalgia of my twenty-year-old memories, however, collided instantly with reality. Centering clay was an exhausting physical negotiation, pulling consistent walls felt nearly impossible, and trimming was an unforgiving test of pressure and touch. I had no idea what I was doing, and my muscle memory had long evaporated.

Yet, in that awkward clumsiness lay an unexpected sense of relief. Beginning something new requires setting ego aside. Showing up at the wheel wasn’t about immediate mastery; it was about honoring a quiet commitment to myself.
