Progress isn't linear—protect your curiosity from the fear of making mistakes.
Early glazing wins brought a rush of confidence. Seeing vibrant colors emerge from the kiln made the process feel almost easy, prompting me to glaze nearly everything in identical hues.
"I was finally starting to feel more confident. I was so happy with the progress. I started glazing, and they turned out GREAT. I loved the colors so much that I glazed almost everything with the same colors. Until I started messing things up…"
Then came the missteps: too much glaze, too little wax resist, and ruined bottoms that compromised weeks of work. The setback stung, quickly shifting my mindset from playful experimentation to cautious hesitation.
"Too much glaze, too little glaze, not waxing the bottom properly, forgetting to clean the glaze off the wax… basically, a whole list of mistakes. Some of them ruined the mugs I had worked so hard on. That was not great for my confidence."
